Professeur Ordinaire / Full Professor

Director of the Cell Biology Department

Françoise Stutz obtained her PhD at the University of Geneva in 1986. After short postdocs at the FMI (Basel) and CMU (Geneva), she spent several years as a postdoc in the lab of Prof. Michael Rosbash in Boston, USA. In 1997, she started her own group as an SNF professor at the Institute of Microbiology, University of Lausanne. In 2003, she moved to the Dept. of Cell Biology at University of Geneva, where she became professor in 2010.

Using yeast as a model system, the Stutz lab works on the importance of nuclear organization in mRNA biogenesis and export through nuclear pores; more recent questions concern the effect of pervasive non-coding transcription on gene regulation and replication, as well as the relationship between nuclear periphery, resolution of DNA-protein cross-links and genome stability.

F. Stutz was elected EMBO member in 2013. She teaches molecular and cell biology at the Bachelor, Master and PhD level and is guiding the research of postdoctoral fellows as well as Master and PhD students.
